I like to run. I like to have goals, even if they are somewhat goofy. So, borrowing from the people who run a marathon in every state, I came up with the idea of running in every county and city in Virginia.
Along the way, I’ll explore the state I live in: from the Shenandoah mountains, to the rural farmland, to the urban areas, to the Atlantic coast.
I have no clue how long it will take. Two years? Three? Five? I figure I might be able to get two or three runs in per month for the most part. I originally was going to run strictly in organized races, but the logistics of attempting to do that seem to be overwhelming. So I’ll run at least the equivalent of a 5K in each city and county. I’ll definitely run in some races, but I think a lot of times I’ll be on my own.
I’m not a very fast runner. I often follow my version of a Galloway walk-run style. And, when it comes to time or distance, I don’t have anything I feel I need to prove to myself or anybody else. If I’m in the middle of a race, get tired and am not having fun, I have no problem walking the rest of the way or dropping out completely.
Most of the Virginia runs will be 5 and 10Ks, with perhaps some 10 milers and half marathons mixed in. Maybe if I’m really ambitious I’ll cap it off with a marathon.
