First Run — Alexandria

For my first official run, I did one of my routine routes – a 4-mile jaunt around my Alexandria neighborhood.

The area was originally settled in 1695. It has been a major tobacco port, a slave trade hub, part of the District of Columbia, occupied by Union troops during the Civil War. Today, Alexandria is both a D.C. suburb and one of the 10 largest cities in Virginia.

One of the things I quickly found out from running near home is that I live in a valley, and most distances involve at least some hills.

Taylor Run - Alexandria

I am hoping that this shows up

Taylor Run is my home street. Historically the area had American Indian hunting camps, early farms and an African American community.

Headed Up Janney's Lane

Janney's Lane is named after Eli Hamilton Janney. He invented an automatic coupler for railroad cars that made the coupling process much safer.

A residential area about a half a mile east of Old Town.

TC Williams High School

It was re-built in 2009 and is a "green" certified school.

Parker-Gray Stadium

Home of the Titans. Not much success lately. The football team hasn't has a winning record since 1995.

Parker-Gray Stadium

The Denzel Washington movie Remember the Titans is very loosely based on the 1971 football season when three Alexandria high schools were consolidated into one.
